In the given figure, ray PQ touches the circle at point Q. PQ = 12, PR = 8, find PS and RS

In figure 3.77, ray PQ touches the circle at point Q. PQ = 12, PR = 8, find PS and RS.
solution

Using tangent secant segments theorem, we have
PQ2 = PR × PS
⇒ (12)= 8 × PS
⇒ PS = \[\frac{144}{8}\] = 18 units
∴ RS = PS − PR = 18 − 8 = 10 units

Explanation:-

Using the tangent-secant segments theorem, we have:

PQ^2 = PR x PS

So, substituting the given values, we get:

(12)^2 = 8 x PS

Simplifying the equation, we get:

PS = 144/8 = 18 units

Therefore, RS can be found by subtracting PR from PS:

RS = PS – PR = 18 – 8 = 10 units.
